Inishowen Development Partnership and Farset Youth and Community have developed a strategic alliance to deliver a cross border cross community youth project. All cost associated with this project are funded and supported by the European Union’s PEACE III Programme, managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the Community Relations Council/Pobal consortium.

The Engage Youth Project is a cross community and cross border youth programme designed to challenge young peoples’ attitudes to cultural identity, equality and diversity. It brings together young people from Donegal, Derry/Londonderry and Belfast incorporating single identity, cross community and cross community/cross border work.

Through accredited media programmes young people are supported to produce stories, films, audio packages and photography for publication, broadcast and exhibitions to influence their communities, challenge perceptions and promote diversity.

The programme delivers accredited training in journalism, photography, podcasting and radio. Participants also have an international residential in Belgium/France where they learn about World War One and the impact of this conflict on the island of Ireland. Participants develop an understanding of a shared past and acquire an OCN Qualification /skills in peace building.

Each programme also includes team building workshops, cultural trips and outdoor pursuits.

All costs relating to activities/residential/cultural trips/travel are paid for by ENGAGE Youth at no cost to participants.

This project commenced programme one on the 7^th of January and saw the first 3 groups going to Belgium on the 18th of February this year with groups from Moville and District Family Resource Centre (Donegal), Inside Out Claudy (County Derry/Londonderry) and Impact Training (Shankill Road Belfast). The second programme commenced on the 25^th of February and had groups from Newtowncunningham Community Development Initiative (Donegal), Reach Across (Derry/Londonderry City), and Off the Street Mountpottinger (East Belfast) going to Belgium on the 2^nd of April.

Inishowen Rural Transport and Inishowen Tourism have come together to develop a tourist bus trail to Malin Head, Monday to Friday, throughout the month June, which will connect directly in Carndonagh to the North West Busways bus arriving from Derry.  This is a pilot scheme being rolled out as a way of integrating Derry & Inishowen as Derry reigns as the UK’s Cultural City in 2013.

This route takes in the coastal views of Fiver Fingers Strand, Knockamany Bends and a visit Banba’s Crown where there will be a dwell time of approximately 1.5 hours to allow the visitor to experience Ireland’s Most Northerly Point and surrounding area.

This initiative was developed as part of the efforts  being made by Inishowen Tourism’s City of Culture Liaison Officer, Jennifer O’ Donnell to interlink Inishowen with  Derry ~ Londonderry as they celebrate a spectacular year as UK City of Culture. ‘ Derry is expecting upwards of 1 million visitors to the City this year and it is vital Inishowen is best placed to take advantage of this. This bus route offers the cultural visitor to Derry a fantastic opportunity to experience a bit of Inishowen and explore the tip of Ireland’

Inishowen Rural Transport, coordinator, Cormac Skinnader says ‘ the aim of Inishowen Rural transport is to enable people both inside and outside the peninsula to make connections, people to people and people to places. This is an ideal opportunity to work with Inishowen Tourism in the promotion of the Peninsula’.

This Bus service will depart Patrick Street Derry daily throughout June at 8.55am and will arrive back in Derry at 1.25pm.

Inishowen Rural Transport is pleased to announce the launch of a new door to door service for older people who need to attend medical appointments, whether it is to your local health centre or to Letterkenny or Derry at a very reasonable cost.

This new service has been made possible with funding obtained from the European Union’s Interreg IVA programme as part of the CAWT Older People’s Project. This has enabled Inishowen Rural Transport to establish a volunteer car scheme specifically for this purpose.  Cormac Skinnader from Inishowen Rural Transport explains that volunteer car schemes have been successful operating in other parts of Ireland including Northern Ireland for many years and offer a real alternative form of transport particularly in areas such as Inishowen which are predominately rural.

Cormac outlines how the volunteer car scheme works. The first step was to recruit a number of volunteer drivers who were both interested and willing to use their own car. At the moment the scheme has six drivers drawn from different parts of Inishowen. Each driver is Garda checked. They must also notify their insurance company.  “The drivers are providing a great service and we can’t thank them enough for the great work that they are doing”, Cormac said.  He went on to explain, it is then as simple as making a call to Inishowen Rural Transport at least 48 hours before you need to attend your appointment. This gives the office time to notify the drivers in a particular area. The office will then confirm your travel arrangements.

The service is available to all older people aged from 65 years of age who don’t have their own transport and who find it difficult to use or access public transport.

Eithne Fullerton a regular user of the service describes the scheme as a ‘great service, Cormac and Noreen always do their best to sort you out. It is also great value for money. I can travel from Buncrana to Letterkenny for €15 return.
